“If I ask him, he will.” Nessa put down the towel, and wrapped her arms around his waist. “I don’t want you to die, Jack.”
He gathered her close. She was soft and warm. Her head fit under his chin and her damp, curly hair tickled his lips. She smelled of rain and flowery shampoo and he wanted to hold her forever. Odd how the thought of forever didn’t bother him when it involved Nessa.
Her phone chimed. She said, “Tenspot’s home.”
He said, “I think I am, too.”
She pulled back and looked up at him, her eyes soft and dark. Outside, the wind caught at the greenhouse with querulous, questing fingers. In the distance, from the direction of the house, wood slammed against wood, as if a window shutter had come loose.
Nessa’s phone burst into a tune Jack didn’t recognize. She gasped, drew back and jabbed the keypad. “Cori? Are you all right?”
