An hour later, Jack set the water from the Fountain on the desk in the greenhouse office. Intermittent rain showers had begun while they were hurrying along the trail, and now he heard drops pattering on the roof and windows. The noise filled him with dread. Hurricane Lulu was getting closer.
“You don’t have to wait with me, Jack.” Nessa emerged from the half-bath holding Harey, who was wrapped in a towel. The smell of wet rabbit fur filled the office as the rain clouds darkened the building. “If you stay much longer, you’ll get caught in the storm.”
“I’ll stay until Tenspot texts you.” Jack clicked the desk lamp on. “I hate to think of him riding his bike home. I should have chased after him.”
“Fast as he was pedaling, you wouldn’t have caught him.” Nessa rubbed the towel across Harey’s fur. The rabbit wiggled his ears. “He’ll be all right. He doesn’t have far to go.”
Jack still didn’t like it. He said, “Why’d he run off like that?”
