He walked to the spring. While he knelt and cleared mud from the hole, Tenspot hovered behind him. Jack glanced over his shoulder to tell him to stay back, but the boy kept his distance, though he got close enough to watch every movement Jack made.
After Jack filled the container and twisted the cap on, Nessa held out the knapsack. He placed the jar inside, and raised his gaze to hers. She smiled again, and his heart skipped. He’d known her only a few short hours. Tia Bella would say he couldn’t be so certain he wanted a lifetime with Nessa that quickly, that love at first sight was as big a myth as most people believed the Fountain of Youth to be. Yet he had no doubt. Whatever happened when he and Tia Bella bathed in the water from the Fountain, he was glad he’d met Nessa.
If reversing the spell didn’t kill him on the spot, he’d tell her so.
He reached for his boot and sock, slipped them on, stood and lifted the knapsack to his shoulders. With one more look at the scudding clouds, he said, “Let’s find Harey.”
