He took a step toward her as Tenspot said, “I believe you, too.” The boy held out the FRESH PEACHES jar. “But how come you won’t let us get a drink?”
Jack took the jar. “I don’t want anyone else to go through what Tia Bella and I have. Promise me you’ll stay away from that spring.”
“Do I have to?”
“Sí, or you forfeit your guide fee.”
Tenspot let out a breath. “All right. I promise.”
Nessa looked at Jack. “Is it so awful to live forever?”
He lacked the words to tell her how awful, so he said, “It’s a curse.”
Tenspot’s eyes widened. “You were cursed, too?”
