“After she fell sick, while we were searching for the Fountain again, Tia Bella and I learned another part of the legend. There are two ways to invoke the spell of immortality. You can drink from the spring or bathe in the water. Whichever way you chose, the other reverses the curse permanently.” Jack paused, as if reciting the legend had reminded him of something else. After a moment, he said, “Maria drank, then turned to speak to me. The edges of the spring crumbled under her feet, and she fell in.”
He sounded so sincere. Just like the caballarius she’d compared him to when they’d first met. Nessa wanted to believe him. But a little voice inside her head kept whispering that no one lived forever. The Fountain of Youth was fable, not fact. No matter how convincing he was, no matter how she felt about him, part of her still worried he was here because of Bradley.
Yet she could think of no reason for him to make up such an incredible story. She studied him, struggling to decide whether to trust her heart or listen to her fear.
