Jack shook his head. “No. My knowledge is first-hand. I was here, with the expedition, along with Maria and Tia Bella.”

Tenspot said, “Who are they?”

“My twin sister and my aunt.” He gestured toward the hole in the ground. “I found the fuente by accident. It was much more open than this in 1513. It looked like a small, deep pool. The water was cool and clear, and the day was hot, like today, a break in the middle of two big storms. All three of us drank from the Fountain. But Maria aged in the years afterward, when we returned to España. Tia Bella and I stayed young.”

When he’d told her his sister had died, his sorrow had been genuine. Nessa asked, “How come Maria didn’t live forever?”
