Tenspot backed up. In view of Jack’s lightning change of attitude, Nessa wouldn’t have blamed him for being afraid, but he simply looked as flabbergasted as she was. “We gotta get a sample,” he said, as if Jack were the child. “How else can we prove this is the Fountain of Youth?”
“This proves it, just as the legend says.” Jack waved the necklace again. The shiny silver piece swayed at the end of the thin, broken chain like a hypnotist’s focal point.
Nessa walked to his side, and touched the chain. The attached pendant was a rough-edged medal, with images of crowns and a lion and Spanish words engraved around the uneven rim. She raised her gaze to Jack’s, a niggle of suspicion rising inside her. “You’re sure this is from the sixteenth century?”
She glanced at the medal again. “Silver almost always oxidizes over time.”
“What’s that mean?” Tenspot asked.
Nessa said, “Unless it was dropped here recently, the metal should be black, not shiny.”
