Then Jack whooped, and brought her back to reality. She stood, brushing sand from her jeans as Jack danced across the clearing, lurching like a horse with a missing shoe every time his bare foot landed. Tenspot looked at her and tipped his head toward Jack, and she raised her hands, palms up. Tenspot made a circle in the air around one ear and rolled his eyes.
“I saw that. I’m not crazy. I’m happy!” Jack came to a stop in front of Nessa. He leaned so close that she thought he planned to kiss her.
She tilted forward, her eyes half closing, and Tenspot said, “Yuck! No smoochin’!”
She jerked back, embarrassment heating her face.
With his mouth only inches from hers, Jack asked, “Do you know what this means, Nessa?”
