“No scratches, no blood, only water.” Nessa let out the breath she hadn’t been aware she was holding. “When Tropical Storm Kyle passed through, a pool of rain must have collected in the gap left by the tree roots.”
“I guess that’s the water Harey found.” Jack smiled at her and took her hand again, though his face was sad. “Thanks, Nessa.”
“When I heard you yell, I was so scared—” She gripped his fingers as words failed her. How had he come to mean so much to her, so quickly?
Tenspot said, “Hey, what’s with you guys? Let’s get movin’. We gotta find Harey.”
Nessa said, “You’re right, Tenspot. Why don’t you get Jack’s boot?”
