“Good work, Tenspot.” Jack studied the marks in the thin ribbon of dirt Tenspot had exposed. “There are plenty of other footprints, too.”
“It’s a game trail,” Nessa said. “But not the same one we started out following.”
Tenspot nodded. “More animals use this one.”
“Maybe it leads to water.”
“You mean Harey really does know where a spring is?”
“I wouldn’t be surprised. Animals can smell water.” Nessa took Tenspot’s sandwich wrapping from him. She went across the clearing and retrieved the knapsack. She scooped up her uneaten sandwich and Jack’s and put them inside, along with the two cans of soda, then came back across the clearing and handed the knapsack to Jack. “I wish the little stinker hadn’t run off.”
Jack shouldered the knapsack. “We’ll find him.”
