He looked from the soda to her face. “For what?”

“For taking me away from all the worry and giving me a day in the sun. For caring enough to lie to your boss, and risk losing your job.”

He didn’t know what to say. There was no way to tell her what was in his heart, what he wanted and dreamed of—and would never be able to have.

She leaned forward and kissed him. All the dammed-up longing swept through him, stronger than the winds of a hurricane. He dropped his sandwich, drew her closer, kissed her back. He had no right. And yet he wanted to have the right. He wanted everything with her, everything the Fountain had denied him.

He said, “Nessa, do you believe—”

At the shout, Jack jerked back. Nessa started, too, and they both turned toward the palmettos, where Tenspot was hopping up and down, reminding Jack of Harey.

“You guys quit kissin’, and come here! I found Harey’s tracks!” When they reached him, Tenspot knelt, scraped aside a tuft of wiry grass, and pointed. “Look!”
