Jack’s mouth fell open.

“We gotta catch him! I didn’t put on his harness and leash!” Tenspot raced to the edge of the woods, dropped to his knees, and vanished the same way Harey had.

“Tenspot!” Nessa launched into a run. Jack grabbed the knapsack and pounded after her.

As they reached the bushes, Tenspot re-emerged, the knees of his jeans filthy. His mouth split into a wide grin. “There’s a game trail on the other side! Come on!”

“Wait!” Jack grabbed the boy’s arm as he pushed back the dense underbrush. “I want you to stay in sight. Let’s look for a path around the thicket.”

“Here.” Nessa pointed toward an open spot along the southern edge of the bushes. “We can go this way.”

Two and a half hours later, Jack sank to the ground beneath the spreading branches of a soldier-straight live oak that hadn’t even been an acorn when he’d visited La Florida in 1513. He shoved his feet through the moldy smelling half-rotted leaves, gouging a trench. A purple-black beetle scuttled across his boot, and a blue jay shrieked over his head. He felt like screaming himself.
