Nessa said, “What on earth is the matter with you?”
“Nothing’s the matter with me. It’s him.” He shot his chin in the direction the truck had gone. “I don’t trust him. I think he’s the one who called in the tip to the Pryer.”
“What? You’re kidding, right?”
“He’s got a motive.”
“What motive? Richard’s a friend, and we’ve known him forever. Cori went to high school with him, and they graduated together. He’s here practically every day. He’s picked up the wreaths and brought us supplies since we first opened the business.”
Jack huffed. “That proves my point.”
“Oh, come on, Jack! What’s this motive you’ve dreamed up? Why would Richard want to make trouble for Cori and me?”
“Think about it, Nessa. The break-in scared you, right? And you’re worried about reporters showing up with questions about Bradley.” He shook his head when she frowned at him. “I’m not going to ask about Bradley. All I’m saying is maybe Richard is taking advantage of the perfect opportunity to get you into his arms.”
“Into his arms? Is that your old-fashioned way of saying you think he has a thing for me?” She stared at him. “Maybe you really are crazy.”
Sí, crazy about you. He hated the idea of her in Richard’s arms. Hated knowing Richard was free to be with her while he wasn’t. He said, “You mentioned he’s here a lot. What about last week? Could he have overheard you and Cori talking? Is there any way he could have known you were both at the hospital on Saturday?”
“Of course he was here last week. Cori and I rushed to finish a big order on Friday before the storm. Richard made a special trip to pick it up. Because he’s a friend.” She looked in the direction the truck had gone. “He wouldn’t do anything to hurt us, Jack.”
But someone would. If not Richard, then who?
