Richard said, “Mrs. Kuhn told me about the break-in at the greenhouse, and Cori’s baby coming so much sooner than you expected. Are you all right staying here by yourself, Nessa?”

“I was a little nervous before Jack came.” Nessa peeked at Jack around Richard’s embrace, then looked up and smiled. “I’m okay now, Richard. Thanks for asking.”

“Hey, you know how I feel about you.” Richard released Nessa. Keeping one hand on her shoulder, he glanced at Jack. “So who’s Jack?”

Nessa said, “Jack Thomas. He works for the World Pryer.”

“A reporter? Mrs. Kuhn didn’t mention that. I can’t believe you let him stay.” Richard’s gaze raked over Jack again. “Is that why you asked about Bradley? Planning to write up that story, Jack Thomas of the World Pryer?”

Jack said, “What’s it to you, Richard?”

Nessa frowned, and Richard’s lips lifted into a smirk. “That’s original,” he said. “Where’d you hear it?”

Jack clenched his jaw and walked past them. “I’ll bring the packages out while you two friends catch up.”

When Jack stalked back to the truck with a stack of boxes a few minutes later, Nessa was laughing with Richard. Jack thrust the boxes at Richard, who scanned them into the computer, ignoring him. While he worked, he asked Nessa questions about Cori and the baby.

Jack said, “Don’t you have to get to your next pickup?”

“Don’t you worry about my job, Mr. Reporter.” Richard set the last package in the truck. “I always have time for Nessa.”

When the truck pulled out of the yard fifteen minutes later, Jack stared after it, steaming.
