He worked out the words in his head as a squat delivery truck pulled into the yard. A muscled young blue-eyed man enveloped in a cocoon of fresh body spray and carrying a handheld computer bounded down the truck’s steps, finger-combing his tousled blond hair.

So this was Richard. Jack disliked him on sight.

Richard stopped short and stared at Jack. “Who are you? Where’s Nessa?”

“What’s it to you?”

Richard scowled. “Don’t get smart with me, pal. Answer the question. Who are you and where’s Nessa?”

“That’s two questions. Which one do you want me to answer?”

“A real wise guy, aren’t you?” Richard looked him up and down. “Listen, pal, I’m Nessa’s friend. I watch out for her, and I’ve never seen you before. Since I know almost everyone in Everyoung, that means you don’t live in town—and that means you don’t belong here.”

“You know everyone in Everyoung, huh?” Jack rocked back on his heels. “Do you know Bradley?”

Richard snapped, “What’s it to you?”

“Oh, that’s an original question. Where’d you hear it?”

They glared at each other for a long, tense second, then Richard’s sharp gaze shifted over Jack’s shoulder. He said, “Nessa!” He smiled and hurried past Jack, deliberately bumping him and shoving him aside, and wrapped Nessa in a bear hug.

Jack recovered his balance as Nessa returned the hug. His hands fisted at his sides.
