“My name? That’s crazy.” Tenspot swung his leg over his bike, and settled on the seat, shaking his head. He wheeled in a circle, then stopped to look at them. “You guys aren’t puttin’ me on, are you? I mean, you’re really going to look for something in the woods, right? You really want me to be a guide?”

Nessa said, “Yes,” at the same moment Jack said, “.”

“Okay, then. I’ll be back in a few minutes. I’m goin’ home to get supplies.”

Jack said, “Will your dad let you?”

The boy shrugged. “He’ll be okay once I tell him I have a job to do.”

As Tenspot rode away, Nessa said, “I don’t think he’s your source, Jack.”

He had to agree. “Not unless he’s Hollywood’s next million dollar kid actor.”

“So we’re right back where we were—which is to say, nowhere.”

“Do you think the tipster meant to stir up questions about that Bradley guy you mentioned?”

“I told you I’m not going to talk about Bradley.” Nessa spun on her heel, surprising him with her sudden anger. “I have to finish the last order, Jack. Why don’t you wait out here, and let me know when Richard shows up?”

She stomped into the greenhouse, her back stiff.

Jack started after her, then stopped. If he followed her, looked into her eyes, touched her, all the words he couldn’t say might tumble out. Telling her how he felt would hurt both of them. After a moment, he began walking toward the greenhouse again. He owed her an apology. He’d just have to be careful about the rest of it.
