She nodded.

He said, “Do you have any other jobs I can do?”

Nessa flicked a look at Jack, and he nodded in response to the unspoken question. She smiled. He was amazed at how easily they understood each other without need for words.

She said, “As a matter of fact, Jack and I are planning an expedition right after Richard picks up today’s wreath orders. You could be our guide.”

“An expedition? What’re you lookin’ for?”

Jack said, “I’ll tell you if you promise to keep it a secret.”

Tenspot raised his chin, his face solemn. “I swear I won’t tell no one.”

“Double swear?”

“Double swear.” Tenspot held up one hand and leaned forward. “What is it?”

Jack whispered, “We’re trying to find the Fountain of Youth.”

“The what?” Tenspot hooted with laughter. “You’re puttin’ me on! I didn’t have to promise to keep quiet about that. Who’d take me seriously? Nobody believes the Fountain exists.”

“Some people do.”

“Like who?” Tenspot’s face scrunched with skepticism, and Jack almost believed the kid knew nothing about the tip to the Pryer.

Nessa said, “Jack works for the World Pryer newspaper. Someone phoned in a tip that the Fountain is on my land.”

“Who’d do a dumb thing like that?”

“The caller gave your name,” Jack said.
