She was willing to help him.

The realization struck Jack with the same force as his fist hitting the tree in her yard. He had so much to say to her, and he had to hold it all inside. He thought he might explode under the pressure. He had to move, had to put some distance between them. He said, “I’ll be right back,” and bolted from the office.

He rushed through the greenhouse and into the yard as Sheriff Garrison’s patrol car nosed around the final bend in the drive and braked to a halt in front of him, so close the heat of the engine blew over him in a smelly gust of diesel and hot rubber.

The sheriff stepped out. “In a hurry to get somewhere, Jack?”

“Always.” He released a breath. “But no matter how fast I move, I can’t seem to get there.”

Behind him, the greenhouse door slammed. He sent a quick glance over his shoulder, and saw the worry on Nessa’s face as she crossed the grassy clearing.

“Everything’s fine with Cori and Holly,” the sheriff said, switching her attention to Nessa. “I came to tell you I caught the creep who broke into your greenhouse. Got the call right after I left here this morning. He tried to rob Ida’s store.”

“The Emporium?” Nessa sucked in a sharp breath. “Is Mrs. Kuhn all right?”
