She said, “I—I was sure I was hallucinating. I heard your voice so clearly.”

“You did?” What was she talking about? Having her pressed so tightly against him jumbled his thoughts.

“Then I thought elves had invaded the greenhouse.” She giggled, and raised her fingers to her lips as if she might not be able to stop. “You know, the good-hearted kind who sneak around finishing up the day’s uncompleted work. But what are the odds an elf would be named Jack?”

He loosened his hold on her, raked a hand through his hair, and tried to make sense of the nonsensical. He had a feeling he was in over his head. She had hallucinated workaholic fairies? He said, “Nessa, what are you talking about?”

She took his hand. The familiar tiny snap gave way to a comfortable, humming warmth that he wanted to last forever. She tightened her fingers on his and led him into the potting area of the greenhouse. After shifting aside the piles of dried marjoram, bay leaves, and red chilies jumbled on top of the bench, she tapped the cover of a square white box.

He gave her a puzzled look. “The intercom?”

“It’s not an intercom. It’s a receiver, the mate to the transmitter in the office.” Nessa tugged him into the greenhouse office and gestured to the second white box.

“So?” Jack glanced at her. “What are they? A magic radio set designed to broadcast job opportunities for good fairies?”
