N Quoteo, no. Cori’s fine. So’s the baby.” The tall blond sheriff wore a tan uniform with two colorful rows of ribbons and medals pinned above the shirt pocket. Her gaze shifted to Jack as he stepped out of the greenhouse behind Nessa.

Nessa released a long breath.

Jack rubbed his fingertips along the length of her spine. A flare of warmth, the same spark that flamed whenever they touched, heated his entire arm. Nessa flinched away from him.

She felt it too.

Not a good idea to be happy about that. He couldn’t afford to like her too much. For both their sakes. He lowered his hand.

“I didn’t mean to worry you,” the sheriff said. “I stopped in to make sure everything was okay. Mrs. Kuhn told me a reporter was at the store, asking after you.”

“That would be me. Jack Thomas.” He stepped around Nessa, taking care not to touch her again. “I am a reporter for the World Pryer.”

“The World Pryer?” Sheriff Garrison hitched a thumb in her gun belt, making it creak. “Is something unusual happening I should know about?”

“Jack’s searching for the Fountain of Youth,” Nessa said.

“He’s searching for what?” Sheriff Garrison tapped her handcuffs. “Do you suffer from any other delusions?”
