“Don’t give up, Jack.”

A hail-hard flurry of pelting rain, followed by a sizzle of lightning and a clap of thunder, made them both jump. The lights in the greenhouse died, sheathing them in gloomy dimness. Nessa drew in a breath. Jack reached her side a moment later, and she leaned into his arms, looking up at him. The pain on his face was as clear as if they’d been standing in the middle of the driveway at high noon. It stabbed at her as sharply as if his pain was hers.

He said, “Thank you for believing me, Nessa. When Mr. Liaberco said I owned the Pryer, I was afraid you’d think he was telling the truth.”
