“Inconclusive? What does that mean?” Jack sounded frustrated.

Nessa said, “It means the lab detected nothing abnormal in the chemical analysis.” She set Harey on the floor and paced the office, as troubled as Jack by the news. After pausing to brush a gob of sand off the paper they’d rescued from the puddle in the yard, she said, “The water sample submitted was moderately hard. It had a relatively high dissolved content of calcium and magnesium carbonates. Those compounds are usually present in water passing through underground limestone caverns.” When she finished reading, she handed the page to Jack. She picked up the second sheet and studied it.
