“That’s what you think.” Mr. Liaberco opened his hand, and released the papers into the wind. They fluttered to the ground, tumbled across the sand, and came to rest in a puddle. He turned on his heel, and slogged back to the Chevy. As he opened the door, he stared at Jack across the car’s roof. “Last chance, Jack. Deal with me, or I’ll take both stories from you.”

Jack hesitated. Had he made the wrong choice? Should he have agreed to the deal and then figured out how to keep Mr. Liaberco from causing problems for Nessa?

Nessa said, “You can’t hurt Bradley. My brother is innocent.”

Mr. Liaberco snorted. “That’s not what I hear.”

Jack said, “Get lost!”

“Fine. I’ll scoop you with or without your help.” Mr. Liaberco climbed in his car and fishtailed from the yard, spewing a fine layer of wet sand over them.
