Jack stood. A blast of wind and rain train-engined into them, and Nessa stumbled against him. He caught her, held her upright. Over the roar of the squall, a deeper, mechanical rumbling grew louder.
Sly Liaberco’s red Chevy inched into the yard, the windshield wipers thumping across the glass to a hip-hop beat. Mr. Liaberco looked at them through the side window, his face pale in the stormy murk. When the wind and rain subsided, he opened the door and got out, leaving the car running. He darted around a puddle, his yellow slicker flaring out behind him. A gust of wind lifted his rain hat off his head. Mr. Liaberco caught it before it hit the ground, and stopped in front of Jack and Nessa.
