Jack wrapped a hand around the doorframe, pulling them both forward. He clutched the knob, trying to drag the door closed, but it took the two of them to wrestle it shut. They clung to each other, stumbling across the yard. The pale gray morning sky spit another wad of rain at them, soaking their clothes instantly. A moment later, the wind slowed.

Jack glanced upward. “Let’s hurry, before another squall comes through.”

“His favorite hiding place is under the porch.”

“I remember.”

They hurried to the house, the wet sand sticking to their shoes. Jack dropped to his knees in front of the break in the latticework and peered into the gloom. Harey huddled in a shivering bundle just out of reach. The rabbit edged away when Jack put out his hand. He drew back. “He’s afraid of me.”

“Let me try.”
