“He’s not hiding in here either. I’ll check the yard. Maybe he ran out when the thief came in.” Bracing himself, Jack pulled the door open. A gust of wind blasted into the building, nearly knocking him off his feet. Rain lashed his face. He staggered back, bumping into Nessa. She caught his waist to steady him. With a noise that sounded like a hooting laugh, the wind swept past them, swirling through the greenhouse. Six herb pots crashed to the floor.

“This must be the back side of the storm.” Nessa shouted over the roar. “The wind’s coming from the opposite direction.”

“You stay inside.” The gale whipped the words from his mouth, and he turned his head to make sure she’d heard.

“No.” She was right behind him. “I’m coming with you.”
