Harey hiccuped, which Jack figured was as close to an answer as they were going to get.
The sheriff chuckled and opened the car door. “Let me know if he ever tells you. That’s one story I’d like to hear.”
Jack said, “Speaking of stories, Sheriff, I wonder if you could help me with mine.”
She raised an eyebrow. “Are we talking about the Fountain of Youth again?”
“Sí,” He smiled at her. “I’m trying to find Moran Tennies.”
“You were just talking to him, Jack. Tenspot is his nickname.” Sheriff Garrison slipped into her car, waved and drove away.
Jack stared after her. Tenspot was the Pryer’s source? A ten-year-old kid? He looked at Nessa. “Tenspot is Moran Tennies? Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because he has enough problems without you adding more.” Nessa cocked her head. “What do you want with him anyway?”
“Tenspot’s the reason I’m here. He called the Pryer about the Fountain of Youth,” Jack said, and realized he’d broken the first rule of journalism by revealing the source of his story.
Nessa stared at him. “You’re telling me you didn’t know you were trying to prove the existence of a myth based on the word of a kid?”
As she set Harey on the ground, Jack could think of nothing to say that sounded intelligent. The rabbit bounced around Nessa’s feet, making short, exuberant hops on stiff legs, looking younger than ever. The hair on the back of Jack’s neck rose straight up. Could it be? No, it was not possible. The spring didn’t work that way—at least, not with people. Did animals react differently?
He said, “Are you sure it’s a myth?”
