He said, “I’m not delusional. Someone called in a tip to the Pryer’s news line, saying the Fountain was here, on Nessa’s property. I was assigned to follow up.”

The sheriff considered him. “Is that why Sylvester Liaberco is hanging around, too?”

Nessa said, “You met Mr. Liaberco, Sheriff?”

“I saw him downtown during the last gasps of Tropical Storm Kyle late Saturday night.” Sheriff Garrison frowned. “The same night your greenhouse was vandalized.”

Nessa’s gaze slid to Jack. He could tell she’d followed Sheriff Garrison’s line of thinking as easily as he had. He said, “Mr. Liaberco’s a lot of things, Sheriff, but I don’t think he’s a vandal.”

“No doubt you know him better than I do.” The sheriff stared at Jack for a long moment, then looked at Nessa. “Besides an invasion of alien reporters, have you had any other problems?”

As Nessa spoke, something moved in the thick stand of trees alongside the drive. Jack caught a glimpse of a white flash that looked like a tee shirt. He took off toward the woods at a run.

Behind him, the sheriff said, “What the heck?”

Jack plunged into the trees as the person wearing the tee shirt swung a leg over a bicycle and started pedaling. Jack yelled, “Oh, no, you don’t!” and caught the skinny arm of a young boy with an unruly mass of dark hair.

The boy struggled, shouting, “Lemme go!”
