“No. And I don’t want to think about it.” She hurried into the office.
Jack stepped through the doorway, too. He glanced around. A desk stood against one wall, the chair in front of it pushed back. On the top of the desk, color-coded wire baskets held stacks of papers. Next to the baskets, he saw a calculator, an answering machine, and Harey, who was nosing a square white plastic box with an antenna and volume control. It looked like an intercom, so someone working in the office could talk to someone in the work area, or in the house.
A second desk with a computer, printer, and fax machine butted against the other wall. A crib for Corinda’s new baby, neatly outfitted with a pink knitted throw, stood beside a blanket-covered cot. In the back, another door led into a half-bath.
“Got you, you little fuzz bomb.” Nessa scooped the rabbit off the desk and handed him to Jack. “Now let’s get that tooth trimmed.”
This time Jack kept a firm grip on the squirmy fuzz bomb while Nessa snipped the overgrown tooth. When she finished, Jack put Harey on the floor. The bunny dashed in a circle around him, then raced back into the main work area.
Only half-joking, Jack said, “Maybe I should follow him.”
“You’re welcome to, if you can keep up with him.” Nessa set the nippers on the desk. “I can’t believe someone thinks the Fountain of Youth is on our property. Why would they call the Pryer and say so? And why would someone break into the greenhouse? It’s not like we keep money or anything valuable here. None of this makes any sense.”
A car horn honked, and Jack stepped out of the office as a green and white police cruiser pulled into the clearing.
Nessa gasped and dashed past him, out of the building. “Sheriff Garrison! Has something happened to Cori?”
