Jack spoke quietly. “The Luminary won’t be printing an exposé. Neither will the Pryer, even if I have to buy both papers to make certain of that. There’s no story, Mr. Tennies. There never will be.”

“There’s no scheme, either.” Nessa glanced at Sheriff Garrison. “I think I can speak for Cori. We won’t be pressing charges. It’s time for all of us to put the past to rest and have a little faith in others.”

Mr. Tennies’s jaw dropped.

“Are you sure?” Sheriff Garrison’s radio cackled, interrupting her. She slid into the patrol car, and checked her on-dash computer. She emerged smiling. “Lulu’s cleared the area, and headed out over open water. She’s been downgraded to a tropical storm. She’s breaking up fast.”
