“No, he didn’t have a Swiss bank account.” Unless she could make Mr. Tennies see the truth, his bitterness was going to ruin his life—and Tenspot’s. “Bradley didn’t con anyone.”

“Uh, huh.”

She jammed her free hand into her raincoat pocket, touched Jack’s medal. She had a new understanding of how he must have felt when she wouldn’t believe him about the Fountain.

“Bradley was positive he’d made a breakthrough,” she said. “He put his heart, soul, and all our savings into his research. When he ran out of funds, he found a partner. But Dennis only wanted money. Bradley was innocent. He put his trust in the wrong man. Don’t you realize we’re as broke as you are?”
