“Our lives were ruined, too.” Nessa sagged against Jack, remembering the trial and all that had happened before and after it. “Bradley was innocent. His partner, Dennis, stole the money from their company.”

“Yeah, right. His silent partner, the one the cops could never find any trace of.” Mr. Tennies snorted. “Bradley was guilty, all right. The facts were plain enough for a jury. Your brother traded on his reputation as a chemist to lure investors into believing he’d come up with a new drug that could cure cancer. But once he had the money stashed in his Swiss bank account, the research ground to a halt and his claims were exposed for the con scheme they were.”

Mr. Sterling whistled through his dentures. “He had a Swiss bank account? I don’t recall that. Golly, it’s like a movie.”
