The silence following his words was almost as thick as the moisture in the air. Nessa stared at Mr. Tennies, unable to speak. When Jack moved closer, she clutched his hand more tightly. He looked like he wanted to throttle Mr. Tennies.

“New con? What new con?” Mr. Sterling was bewildered.

“They’re planning to pass off the Fountain of Youth as real.” Mr. Tennies spat into the dirt. “Some scam, huh? Almost as big as the last one.”

Jack said, “You called the Pryer, didn’t you, Mr. Tennies?”
