The sheriff sighed, a long drawn out sound of visible patience. It struck Nessa as the kind of noise cops make when they know they’re being stonewalled, and they want the suspect to know they know.

Sheriff Garrison waved a hand toward Jack and Nessa. “These two eyewitnesses tell me you were acting suspiciously, Tenner. Though I’m not sure how much they could see through the mud they’re wearing.” From the way the sheriff looked at them, Nessa could tell it took a real effort for her to bite off the question she wanted to ask. She turned back to Mr. Tennies. “Unless you have a good explanation for your presence on this property, you’re looking at a charge of criminal trespass.”

His eyes, dark and heavy with dislike, fixed on Nessa. “Guess your friendship with the sheriff here will come in handy when your brother gets out of prison and starts his next con.”
