She barely had time to register the fallen tree before Jack slammed on the brakes. The truck’s wide tires bit damp earth, clung, shuddered under the strain, and dug deeper. The brakes thudded into anti-lock mode. Nessa lurched forward, jerked back as her seatbelt caught. The truck slid to a halt inches from the trunk and rocked, the bumper scraping against the tree’s bent and broken branches.

Jack yanked his phone from his pocket and tossed it to her. “Call the sheriff.”

He threw open his door and vaulted out before she had time to tell him she didn’t want to cause that kind of trouble for Tenspot, no matter what the kid had done. She scrabbled with her seatbelt while Jack clawed his way over the sprawling oak. On the other side, she saw Tenspot toss his bicycle in the back of his father’s pickup, and climb into the driver’s seat.
