The wet dirt flowed faster into the shrinking opening, and a flash of silver caught his eye. His colgante had fallen from the tree branch. It joined the silent, muddy river.

Nessa cried, “Your medal!”

Before he could turn, she dove after it.

His heart fell. He dropped the jar and grabbed for her. He caught her around the waist, and yanked her to her feet. Terror made him shout, “What are you doing?”

She raised a dirt-streaked face, and unballed her fist. “I rescued your medal.”

She’d risked the curse of immortality to save his colgante? He glowered at her, his fear transformed into anger at her carelessness for her own safety.
