“I’ll hold you steady. Get the sample.”

He wiped his dirt-caked lips on the sleeve of the raincoat and reached into the hole again. He could see the jelly jar, and he groped for it, then strained to stretch his arm the few extra inches to reach the spring. Water trickled into the jar. When he was satisfied he had enough, he said, “Got it.”

Nessa pulled him to safety. She let go of his legs once he was clear, and he levered himself to his knees, then to his feet, holding the jar carefully. It was full, the water crystal clear despite the oozing mud. Elation flowed through him, making his fingers tremble as he twisted the cap on. A sheet of rain slanted out of nowhere, rinsing some of the grime from his face. Then, as suddenly as it had materialized, the brief reminder of the departing hurricane vanished.
