The small gusher of agua was so deep he thought he might not be able to reach it. After taking the jar from his pocket, he lay on the ground, next to the pile of dirt he’d excavated. He extended his arm into the narrow pit. The soft edge gave way under his weight and he slid, his face plowing into the mud. The jar dropped from his fingers, landing at the bottom of the hole with a faint thunk. He kept himself from following by grabbing the root of the fallen pine. He shoved himself backwards. His hands slipped, finding no purchase. Something grabbed his legs and he slid away from the hole.

He looked over his shoulder. Nessa sat in the dirt behind him, her feet against the pine, her fingers gripping his legs tightly above his boots.

He shouted, “Stay back! The ground’s giving way.”
