He could only stand and stare at the swaying colgante. Slow-motion seconds dripped by. Each raindrop that slipped off the silver chain hung for a moment before falling ever so slowly into the spring hidden beneath the ground.

Jack took a deep breath, trying to force the rain, the wind, the mud, from his mind. All the while, over the frenzied pounding of his heart, beyond the measured ticking of time, a voice in his head repeated a horrifying refrain.

Too late. Too late. Too late.
