They rounded the final bend in the path, and Nessa slowed. Jack moved ahead of her. He pushed back the wind-whipped shrubs, and stepped from the narrow trail into the overgrown forest. He thrust aside the last of the clinging bushes separating them from the spring, stopped short, and closed his eyes, afraid of what he might see—or worse, what he might not see.

Nessa said, “Your medal’s still there.”

He forced himself to look. The colgante hung where he’d left it, dangling crookedly from the tree, whipping back and forth in the pulsing wind. He tightened his grip on the jelly jar. He had to get to the spring. But his feet were heavy, as if encased in thick cement that made walking impossible. His lips and mouth went dry. Blood pounded in his ears. He wanted to dash across the small clearing, leap over the fallen log that blocked his view of the fuente.
