He gripped the jar in one hand, and charged after her, knowing what was on her mind. If the bank at the edge of the fuente loosened, crumbled in on itself, the Fountain would be lost again. As they raced along the thin path, he looked up at the swaying tops of the shallow-rooted pines. Their strength was only an illusion. Hurricane winds could easily topple them.

And if they fell, they’d crush anyone standing underneath them.

He re-focused on the trail, refusing to allow himself to imagine one of the thick-trunked goliaths crashing to the ground, squashing them under its weight. At least this time getting lost wasn’t a concern. Thanks to the markers they’d left yesterday, they knew exactly where they were going.
