Jack clung to a quivering pine tree and grabbed Nessa’s arm as a gust of wind tried to knock him right out of his boots. The woods was a swirling, thrashing maelstrom of greenery. The purple slicker Nessa had loaned him flapped and caught on the tree’s bark. The jelly jar he’d stuck in the pocket clanked against his phone with the impact.

Nessa said, “Did the jar break?”

“I can’t tell.” When the wind eased off a bit, he let Nessa go and yanked the vinyl coat free. He shoved his fingers into his pocket, pulled the glass jar out and inpected it. “It’s okay.”

“Thank goodness.” Nessa held the hood of her rain jacket tight around her chin and broke into a jog, then a flat-out run. She called over her shoulder, “Hurry! The ground’s turning to mush.”
