Below is the text version of the audio.

“For what?”

“For taking me away from all the worry and giving me a day in the sun. For caring enough to lie to your boss and risk losing your job.”

He didn’t know what to say. There was no way to tell her what was in his heart, what he wanted and dreamed of.

What he would never be able to have.

She leaned forward and kissed him.

All the dammed-up longing swept through him, stronger than the winds of a hurricane. He dropped his sandwich, drew her closer, kissed her back. He had no right. And yet he wanted to have the right. He wanted everything with her, everything the Fountain had denied him.

He drew back. “Nessa, do you believe—”

Jack spun toward the palmettos, where Tenspot hopped up and down, as if channeling Harey.

“You guys quit kissin’ and come here! I found Harey’s tracks!”

Jack hurried across the clearing, Nessa at his side.

Tenspot knelt, scraped aside a tuft of wiry grass, and pointed. “Look!”

***** ABOUT THE AUTHOR *****

HL Carpenter is the pen name of a Florida-based mother/daughter duo who writes from their studios in Carpenter Country, a magical place that, like their stories, is unreal but not untrue. When they’re not writing, the Carpenters enjoy exploring the Land of What-If and practicing the fine art of Curiosity.

Also by HL Carpenter:

The SkyHorse. Fourteen year old Tovi thinks finding a flying horse is fabulous luck–until a mysterious stranger says finders aren’t always keepers.

Dream Stealer. Is stealing a dream better than losing your own?

Pirate Summer. When her brother disappears, Josey is sure she knows where he’s gone. And the only way to bring him home is to travel two hundred years into the past with a boy she can’t trust.
