“What on earth is the matter with you?” Nessa asked.
“Nothing is the matter with me. He is the one with the problem.” Jack tipped his chin in the direction the truck had gone. “I do not trust him. I think he is the one who called in the tip to the Pryer.”
“What? You’re kidding, right?”
“He has a motive.”
“What motive? Richard’s a friend. We’ve known him forever. Cori went to high school with him, and they graduated together. He’s here practically every day. He’s picked up the wreaths and brought our supplies since we first opened the business.”
Jack huffed. “That proves my point.”
“Oh, come on! What’s this motive you’ve dreamed up? Why would Richard want to make trouble for Cori and me?”
“He has reason. The break-in scared you, no? And you are worried reporters will show up with questions about Bradley.”
He raised a hand. “I am not going to ask about Bradley. All I am saying is maybe Richard is taking advantage of the perfect opportunity to get you into his arms.”
“Into his arms? Is that your old-fashioned way of saying you think he likes me?” She laughed. “Maybe you really are crazy.”
Sí, crazy about you. He hated the idea of her in Richard’s arms. Hated knowing Richard was free to be with her while he wasn’t.
“You mentioned he is here a lot.” Jack gestured in the direction Richard had gone. “What about last week? Could he have overheard you and Cori talking? Is there any way he could have known you were both at the hospital on Saturday?”
“Of course he was here last week. Cori and I rushed to finish a big order on Friday before the storm. Richard made a special trip to pick it up. Because he’s a friend.”
“Are you sure?”
“Positive. He wouldn’t do anything to hurt us.”
But someone would. If not Richard, then who?
