She had rounded the driveway’s first bend before Jack pulled up next to her in the truck. Her leg muscles were aching and every ragged breath burned her throat. Despite her efforts to keep up her speed, the intruder was out of sight.

Jack slowed the truck and flung open the passenger door. She gripped the grab handle over the door and hauled herself into the cab. She flopped into the bucket seat, wheezing in an effort to catch her breath.

Jack tromped on the gas pedal before the door fully closed. His grip on the steering wheel was so tight his fingers were white. Nessa grabbed the armrest as the truck bounced over a pothole.

“What took you so long?” she asked, when she could speak.

“I am sorry,” Jack said. “I had to find a place in the garage to leave the agua. Did you see who—”

“No.” She fastened her seat belt as the truck hit another pothole. “But I recognized Tenspot’s bike.”

“Tenspot!” Jack’s voice rose. “That kid has some explaining to do.”

Her thought exactly. “He sure does.”

And when they caught him, she was going to make sure his explanation was complete, as well as true. She peered out the windshield, her jaw set.

SHOW NOTES

We’re new to the Audacity, the sound program we use for our audio recordings, and to sound effects in general. These are our thoughts on the current episode.

Recording. We recorded this segment in two takes, after two practice runs with the microphone off.

Technical. The latest version of Audacity is simple to use and produces excellent audio. We are still indebted for the help we received on the forum.

Comments. “Gripped the grab handle” is a tough phrase. 🙂

Story changes. Added tension and action to this week’s scene. Also tried to be more clear about whose point of view is dominant in this chapter.
